To start with, we thought Jessie Simpson was my grandmothers sister, then we discover she was my grandmothers young unwed mother. There is no trace of her besides her own birth index and on my grandmothers ( Mavis) birth certificate. Census and electoral rolls have placed my grandmother in the home of her grandparents Frederick and Isabella. I had found no such documents with Jessie's name attached to it. After some hard digging and a free two week trial on another family history page, I finally put some pieces together that I couldn't not entirely say was so. I do have the documentation now. Jessie Simpson had my grandmother in 1914 as an unwed mother at the age of 20 to a man named Henry Gardiner, who was already married and expecting a child with his wife at the same time. Jessie named her daughter Mavis Gardiner Simpson. I am not sure if Jessie left her daughter to be raised by her parents then, but by 1918, Jessie had found George Fletcher and married him. I have found that Jessie died in 1982, just 3 years before her daughter did aged 82. I have done a little more digging and found two electoral roll entries for 1934 and 1937 for George and Jessie Fletcher at King Street Rockdale NSW. Other then this, I have found no more information, need to keep on digging!

I have started to write up the Simpson page, as with all the other pages, I am adding information to them all the time, so please do keep checking up on them. Since we have now found Isabella and Frederick are in fact my great great grandparents and not just great, I have had to update my family tree to reflect this information. At this point in time, I have just added an ancestry tree, I will see about making a pretty one in the next few weeks. There has been other places I have had to fix/add since finding that Henry Gardiner is my Great grandfather, like adding the Gardiner name to the list of surnames and now I will need to dedicate a page to my findings :D ... Will post more later, think it is time to hit the hay ( insomnia sucks but when it hits it hits!) night all xx
A previous post a few weeks ago was about the discovery that my grandmothers parents were not Frederick and Isabella Simpson as we were led to believe through the electoral rolls but their daughter Jessie Mcintosh Simpson. My grandmothers birth certificate stated that Jessie Simpson was her mother and the father was left blank. Talking to my cousin about our grandmothers middle name of Gardiner, how it is an unusual name and that there is a trend of usually using maiden names as a middle name to keep it a family name. Well Jessie was only 20 years of age when she had my grandmother Mavis and she was unwed. We were left with a blank... That is until my DNA results came in. My first and highest match was with a D.B and there were only 7 people in this tree, yet our Amount of Shared DNA 249 centimorgans shared across 16 DNA segments.
Clicking on the link there is two surnames... Simpson and Thomas.. Coincidence? Yeah that is what I thought. I have traced back a fair bit on all lines and there is no other Gardiner in my ancestors. The DNA tells me we are second cousins. Following on in to the tree, I discover a Henry Gardiner who I think is the father of my grandmother. Henry came to Australia from Gloucestershire England in 1911, he was married with one child, who at the time of his arrival in Australia was 4 months old, The profile has the wife and child come from England 4 months later arriving on the 12th March 1912. At the time of my grandmothers birth, Jessie was 20 years old, Henry was 36. My grandmother was born 29 July 1914, Henry's wife Maud had a child September the same year... Busy man.. Now I just have to work out what to say to these people before I can contact them so we can ill in the blanks and let them know their ancestor ( my great grandfather) was a big arse cheat ( pertaining that this is indeed the guy, and no other relative of his) Stay Tuned for the continuing saga... |
AuthorMy name is Davina and I have been researching my family history since 2011. I started with almost nothing but ended up with a wealth of information and I needed an outlet to show and display all the information I have found. Archives
