My Mother's Family
My mother and father were not married when I was born, so I was to take the Dodds name. My mother has been married previously twice but adopted her maiden name of Dodds. I have 2 sisters and 1 brother, all still living.
My grandfather Charles H Dodds was born in Comet Vale Western Australia in the year 1917, which is now a non-existent town in the goldfields of Western Australia. Charles had 3 siblings, John William, Lily May and Arthur. Making their way down south of Western Australia via Boulder, to a town called Jardee, Charles mother Lily (Hahnel) died. Charles was 14.
Charles married Merlve J.E Dodds at the age of 22 in Coolgardie Western Australia 1939. 1939 was also the year of the birth of his first child, Raymond, and the enlistment in the army. At the end of the war Charles was a Rank Signalman Posting at Discharge SIGS 3 AUST DIV The 3rd Division was deployed to New Guinea in early 1943.
1941 saw the birth of my mother Merlve Joyce and 1943 the birth of his third child Alan. The Dodds lived in Kalgoorlie Western Australia during this time. At the age of 34, Charles father John William Dodds dies in the Swan district region of Perth Western Australia, 1951. Charles then moved his family to Perth in 1963 and then back to Kalgoorlie between 1972 and then in the mid 80's they moved back to Perth before my mother died in 1987. My grandfather Charles died on 02 April 1992.
John William Dodds was born in the year 1882 in Hyde Park South Australia. He was one of five children born to William and Isabella. John was born after his sister Mary Jane (born 1880 died 1892) then there was Elizabeth Ann (born 1884 died 1889), Richard Middleton (1886). The birth of John's sister Mary Ann in 1892 and her death in April 1893. That same year, in November, William also passed away at Happy Valley South Australia, Leaving Isabella with two young boys to bring up. (Now I am not sure what or where this Elizabeth fits in, but when William and Isabella came to Australia in 1879 ship records records a 2 year old child named Elizabeth Dodds. Isabella, William and Elizabeth were the only Dodds on board that ship... so more needs to be discovered so I can complete this biog, My idea is that she died sometime from 1976 after being listed on board the ship ( she was not recorded as a death on board) and sometime before Elizabeth Ann was born in 1884.)
After John's father William died, Isabella took her two children to Western Australia to live with her new husband. Living between Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie, John met and married Lily M Hahnel in Coolgardie 1913, a year after their marriage came their first child, ( Now I originally had a Albert Dodds born 1911, source I have is a newspaper clipping stating Mr and Mrs J Dodds of Boulder road born at Shady Nook Maternity, however this happens to be 2 years before John and Lily's marriage. I have more work to do here) John's namesake John William Dodds in 1914, then my grandfather Charles Henry Dodds 1917, Lily May Dodds in 1921 and then Arthur Dodds in 1927. ( I am wondering if there are other children I have not found who did not survive).
John and Lily moved around the goldfields a bit, from Kalgoorlie/Coolgardie to Mt Leonora and the now non-existent town of Comet Vale/Menzies. John is listed as a Miner as his occupation on 1921 Comet Vale Post Office Directory and then as a Saddler on the 1922 Electoral roll in the Yilgarn district. The 1925 electoral roll has John and Lily in the Nelson sub-district of Forrest, living in Manjimup. The 25 of March 1932, Lily, John's wife died at the Warren Hospital in Jardee. Sometime after the death of her husband Kenneth in a POW camp in Poland in 1941, Lily May Kroenert moved to Manjimup to be with her father. John's mother Isabella died the following year in 1941 at the Woman's home in Woodbridge.
14th of October, John William Dodds died in the Swan district of Western Australia.
Robert William Dodds was born in Tynemouth, Northumberland, England on the 3rd April 1883, to parents John and Mary Dodds. William (as he went by) has one older brother John, two younger brothers Thomas and Walter and one younger sister Jane. William married Isabella Ann Middleton ( who was born in Mickley Northumberland) at Jesmond parish, address was listed as Franklin st South Shields on the 12th of December 1874. They set sail for Australia on the 5th of January 1879 on board the Trevelyn. Now listed with them is a child about 2 named Elizabeth Ann Dodds, there are records she died in March 1884, that same year Isabella and William had a daughter born in July 1884 that they also named Elizabeth Ann. After the death of their daughter Mary Jane in 1891, they also named their daughter Mary Ann in 1892.
I have not found the ship that Williams brother John came over on, but he did at some point. Both brothers were involved with the Order of free Gardner's of the Oak lodge of Mitchem SA with the Dodds brothers being founders of the lodge in Mitchem.
William had been listed as an agricultural labourer and also a Teamster on the trams at Goodwood South Australia and his brother (from newspaper clippings) was a police officer. William died in hospital at the age of 40, a Primitive Methodist, I have not yet found records on what had happened, but will update when I do. With John Dodds in the police force, I am wondering if William was too, as his wife remarried only a short 3 months after his death while pregnant to John Boucher Hodges who was also a mounted police officer.
